Consultations on Proposals to move Bridgeview Primary school to Pickering Ward

by on 14 November, 2011

Many local residents have contacted the Lib Dem team about the Council’s proposals to move the primary school part of Bridgeview to the existing Tilbury school site. More than 1,000 residents have signed petitions that have been presented to the Council about the matter.
As local councillors for Pickering Ward, Cllrs Claire Thomas and Abigail Bell have made it very clear to everyone at the Council that they oppose the plans to move Bridgeview to the Tilbury site. So far, they have:-

Made it clear to the Council’s Education Managers that they do not support the proposals;
Passed on to the Council all the concerns raised by local residents;
Spoken out in Full Council about the quality of the consultation process;
Fought for and won an extension of the consultation to allow local people to have a proper say;
Put formal recommendations forward to cabinet (the committee that takes the final decision) via the West Area Committee;
Spoken in Full Council in support of the petition from staff and local residents calling for Bridgeview to remain on the existing site.
Unfortunately, despite Claire and Abigail raising the issue repeatedly, the strong show of public support as evidenced by the petitions, and the hard work of staff and local residents, the City Councils’ Cabinet has decided to continue with their plans to move the school .

The cabinet have made one small change to the previous consultation, which is to consult on 2 different options for the Bridgeview Primary site, instead of the one option consulted on previously. The two options now being consulted on are the existing Tilbury Primary school site, on Tilbury Road, and the existing Bethune Park Primary school site, which is next to the existing Sirius Academy site.

The local Lib Dem team do not think this is good enough, and when the petitions were presented to Full Council on 20th October , Claire spoke out asking the Cabinet to include the possibility of keeping the school on its current site as an option. Sadly, cabinet have decided not to do this.

Claire and Abigail have been working with local residents who are against the plans, to ensure their views are put forward. They would also like to know what your views are on the new proposals.

You can also make your views known to the Council at the following consultation dates:

Bethune Park Primary School on Thursday 17th November from 5-7pm

The Heart of Boothferry Café, Bethune Avenue, on Monday 21st November from 5-7pm
